Watch out for unexplained bruises or bites on your body. They may not mean something serious like cancer — in many cases, they can be caused by bed bugs.

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small reddish-brown insects about the size of an apple seed. They usually come out at night and feed on human blood while people sleep. Although they are called bed bugs, they can hide in many places such as mattresses, furniture, carpets, wall cracks, and even electrical outlets.

These pests spread easily because they travel on luggage, clothing, and used furniture. They are commonly found in hotels, apartments, and other places where many people stay.

One of the most common signs of bed bugs is itchy red bites that often appear in small lines or clusters on exposed areas like the arms, neck, face, or legs. Other signs include tiny blood stains on sheets, dark spots left by the bugs, or a musty odor in heavily infested areas.

If you suspect bed bugs, carefully inspect your bed, furniture, and nearby cracks where they might hide. The most effective solution is professional pest control, which may include insecticides or heat treatments. At home, washing bedding at high temperatures, vacuuming regularly, and using protective mattress covers can also help reduce the problem.

To prevent infestations, inspect second-hand furniture, be cautious when traveling, keep luggage off beds, and seal cracks where pests can hide.

Taking quick action is important to stop bed bugs from spreading and protect your home.
